The Story o Zed and the Mighty Saltathon

I am Zed. Some folks call me Tall Bike Jesus around these parts, but for the purpose of this here story telling you can call me Zed - - Zed Bailey.

I have always taken an interest in pushing my own abilities and in helping others push their own abilities.

In particular on the bicycle.

I started cycling communities, hosted cycling galleries and found myself out to most major cycling events.

I first encountered not the Salt Lake City Marathon, but the Salt Lake City Bike Tour. It was an insanely great opportunity to join together with my fellow cyclist from all different rides of life.

More importantly, it become an opportunity to once again help my fellow cyclist.

You see, I have this friend who has been active all of his life. He was a wander that we all dream of being but don't have the courage to follow. He was a cyclist, a train hopper, a protester held charisma in his every step.

In his adventures he got a spinal injury which consequently left him rather paralyzed.

He was devastated. He was close to suicide, downtrodden.

Then he found the handcycle. He found hope. As a friend I decided to pace him on my bicycle.

He had a long night, it was hard. He had rode a century before on that handcycle, but that early morning it wasn't going as well. It didn't feel right.

He made friends quick with the other handcycist and encouraged him to not stop.

Then he came to the hill on the course. It was the one that goes under the underpass and climbs high. One of the largest hills on the course.

The friend he had made struggled up it, arms failing.

Behind him was my friend, not just idly encouraging him up this hill but he was pushing him up the hill. So I took his picture.

It is for this reason that I have decided to run in the marathon, for instances like this. Because if a man who can't walk can move people and make it happen, then I, with my outstretched limbs will be able to destroy this marathon in my pounding of feet.

My accomplishment is small in comparison to my friends. I merely extending the light, the encouragement that he shared on the hill that day, and I too hope to share my light with others by doing this 26.2.

Get mad. Get Angry. Focus that anger. Focus that rage. In every step. In every movement. Let it flow through your veins, course through your blood. Use the frustrations, the sorrows, the demons within you as your tools for destroying this marathon. Let the boredom, the suicidal tendencies, the non-complacency be destroyed under your pounding feet. I'm a HUMAN BEING, Goddamnit and my life has VALUE! & from those steps I will scream, "I'm as mad as hell, and I am not going to take this anymore!"
